ECHOS Home ‘The Mast’

After the Kosovo-war was ended by the NAVO-invasion the 10the of June 1999 the United Nations Security Council confirms in resolution 1244 what did started humanitarian assistance, redevelopment
and organising a new authority system. The civil part was formed by the United Nations Mission in
Kosovo (UNMIK). The military part became the Kosovo Force (KFOR), managed by NATO. At the 12th
of June 1999, two days after the Kosovo-war ended, KFOR started her activities. KFOR took over the Serbian authorities in Kosovo in different stages. The headquarters of KFOR is situated in Pristina, the capital of Kosovo. In recent years the amount of soldiers has been reduced.

Between the 12th of April 1999, and the 8th of August 2000 The Netherlands Ministry of Defence supported KFOR. First they took part with an artillery unit which operated within the Multinational
Brigade South (MNB-South), under German command. The Dutch unit was entered around the city of Orahovac. This Taskforce Orahovac has kept order and peace, supported refugees, and kept an eye on the armistice. ECHOS Homes ‘The Mast’ in Pristina is open since 2000. It provides an important function as ‘home base’ for mainly British and Portuguese soldiers. However, the British troops are also leaving Kosovo. Military base ‘Slim Lines’ has been taken over by the Portuguese at the beginning of May this year. The Portuguese would like to keep this ECHOS Home as their home base and have requested
Home-Base Support to continue its presence. On the 15 May 2009 the contract was signed by Major Fernando Artur Ferreira Teixera on behalf of the Portuguese MoD and CEO Mr Cor H. Louwerse MMO,
on behalf of Home-Base Support.

Today there are still NATO forces located in Kosovo. All these soldiers who are living and working in a stressful situation need a place to recreate, and relax. That is why we build ECHOS Home ‘The Mast’ which was opened after the war in 1999.
